He drives a five-year-old Toyota.

Not because he cannot afford anything else. He has twice the cost of a new electric vehicle sitting idle in his bank account. Banks are not waiting for him to call. They are calling him, competing with each other to offer cheap loans. He is building something real, and by every measurable standard, it is working.

He drives a five-year-old Toyota because he grew up in Nigeria.

In Nigeria, debt is not a tool. It is a trap. Interest rates that make your eyes water. Inflation that eats your savings before you can spend them. You learn early that what you cannot pay for in cash, you cannot afford. That rule kept him alive financially for years. It is the foundation underneath everything he owns today.

The problem is that he is no longer in Nigeria.

He is now in an environment where banks call him. They compete to lend him money cheaply. Leverage is a standard instrument for building wealth. The same discipline that saved him is costing him quietly, every month, in the form of opportunities he walks past because the old map says no.

I sat with him for ninety minutes. We were supposed to be done in thirty.

By the end of it, we had done one thing: separated the strategy that built him from the strategy that will take him further. They are not the same strategy. They were never going to be. This is the time when the thing that served you in the past starts becoming a liability. At some point, the same discipline that built the foundation undermines the structure itself.

When you are driving a car, it is often the same leg you use to accelerate that you use to press the brake. You cannot press both pedals at the same time. The moment you move contexts, the old rules begin to expire. Not all of them. Some principles are universal: do not spend what you do not have, understand what you are signing, and protect the foundation. But the specific applications of those principles change when the environment changes. Cheap debt in a low-inflation economy is not the same instrument as a cooperative loan at 30% in Lagos. The instrument looks the same. The context is entirely different.

He can afford the electric vehicle he has wanted for years. Not just afford it but buy it outright and still have capital remaining. He has not bought it because some part of him still believes that wanting something is a luxury he has not earned. He has earned it twice over.

This is not a piece about buying cars.

It is about the moment when survival logic needs to be retired in favour of growth logic. About recognising that the rules you built your life around were correct for the life you were living then and may be wrong for the life you are living now. The hardest part is not identifying this. The hardest part is giving yourself permission to update the map.

He is 45 days into the work we did together. He is not the same person who walked into that room.

That is what this is about.
