The Horse-breaking Woman
by K. L. Sandstrom
I met a woman who broke horses.
She was the mother of my friend,
but she broke horses for a living.
She broke them when she was young.
She broke them when she was not so young.
She laughed big!
She cried hard!
Her eyes were wide and wise.
I knew...
that she knew...
I didn’t need “breaking”.
She knew, I needed no more whips and ropes,
or goads
or spurs
or tugs and pulls and guides.
When I met my friend’s mom….she knew...
She knew I had already been broken.
And she was always kind to me.
