Unfashionable Tools, Unshakable Peace

Unfashionable Tools, Unshakable Peace

Jun 16, 2025

Theme: Preparing for life’s rainy seasons—even if it means standing out.

Background

When it started raining in Nairobi, I wore my gumboots everywhere—through the CBD, into meetings, across muddy paths. People stared. The sun would come out by noon. But I never had to worry. I was dry, warm, and unbothered. It reminded me that life is much easier when you dress for the season you’re in, even if your choices don’t match the crowd. Some tools protect your peace, not your image.

Mantras

  • I choose tools that serve me, not impress others.

  • I’d rather be prepared than praised.

  • My peace is worth the stares.

  • I do not owe anyone fashionable suffering.

  • I am learning to walk wisely—boots, burdens, and all.

Reflection

Not everything that shelters you will fit the trend. Some of the best decisions look awkward in the moment—like renting a small SQ near your workplace to save on time and fare, or carrying an umbrella when the sky is still blue. The people laughing now don’t see the hidden gains: peace, productivity, and power. What tools—physical or otherwise—do you need to embrace for the season you’re in?

Call to Action

What’s your equivalent of a gumboot right now?
What are you willing to wear, carry, or choose—so that you’re ready for whatever weather life brings?
