I've been working on the iOS version of Planetary for a number of years, doing my best to keep it alive during the relentless onslaught of technology obsolescence! The tech behind it was good for its time but is now pretty much obsolete, and has been for some time (Apple stopped supporting it in 2018!).
For the past couple of years I've been working (between the day job and a baby!) on a completely new renderer that is faithful to the original one, but using new technology. Over the past few months I've been using some AI tools to help me, and it's really helped me move forward, particularly with some of the more painful tasks. During this rewrite it was important for me to keep the aesthetic - Planetary is a piece of art! This is my first public reveal of that renderer, targeted at the web. I hope you all like it. Hopefully having it on the web will make it available to a wider audience.
The new renderer and rebuild lets me add new features much easier. You'll find the playlist function in the new version a lot better, and I've even had it connected to Spotify. I'll be using this version as the basis for new iOS, AppleTV, and Android apps over the coming months.
This is a first beta version I'm previewing to people who bought me coffee :) I'd love to hear your feedback and any issues you've encountered. I've only really tested it in Safari, but it should work in Chrome and most browsers.
Thanks for all your support and kind messages over the years. Click here to try it out. It works best on desktop, but you can try it on your phone or tablet too. If you're on an Apple device it's best to add the website to your home screen so that it runs in fullscreen mode.
