I think what drives me most is curiosity. I’ve always had a need to understand things and why we behave the way we do, why we believe certain things, and how much of what we consider to be rational is actually shaped by emotion, instinct and experience. That curiosity is a huge part of where my art comes from.
I’m passionate about creating work that makes people stop for a moment. I don’t necessarily need someone to understand exactly what I was thinking when I made a piece; I’d rather it creates some kind of reaction or starts a thought of their own. Sometimes that might be fascination, discomfort, humour, sadness, or all of those things at once.
What makes having supporters of my work particularly meaningful is knowing that something that existed initially as an idea in my own head can eventually become meaningful to someone else. When someone buys a piece, shares my work, follows what I’m doing, or simply takes the time to have a conversation about it, they become part of that process. It allows me to keep making work, but it also gives the work a life beyond me.
I’m still developing as an artist and I don’t think I’ll ever feel like I’ve completely figured it out. That’s part of what keeps me going. I want to keep experimenting, questioning things, making work that I haven’t made before, and hopefully creating something that people can find a little piece of themselves in.
