The Art of Receiving: Are You Actually Available for More?

Sep 03, 2026

We often say we want more money, love, freedom, success, connection and joy. Yet receiving more can bring up discomfort. We may want the promotion but feel uneasy being praised, desire more money but feel guilty charging for our work, or long for love while struggling to accept affection.

Receiving is more than getting. It means recognising something good when it arrives, allowing yourself to experience it and letting it become part of your reality without immediately minimising, explaining or earning it.

A useful question to ask is: What is already here that I once wished for? Consider your home, independence, friendships, health, work, freedom, relationships, knowledge or the person you have become. Even ordinary moments, such as a warm bed, a quiet morning or a message from someone you love, may represent things an earlier version of you hoped for.

Gratitude can become a practice of receiving through four simple steps: Notice, Appreciate, Receive and Expand. Notice what is already present instead of focusing only on what is missing. Appreciate it by allowing yourself to feel its goodness. Receive it without deflecting, apologising or immediately wondering what you owe in return. Then ask what becomes possible when you allow this experience to be part of your life.

Receiving help may allow you to stop carrying everything alone. Receiving a compliment may help you become more comfortable with visibility. Receiving rest may give your nervous system space to imagine rather than simply survive. Receiving love may allow you to soften into deeper connection.

Appreciating what you have does not mean settling or abandoning your desires. You can be grateful for your current life while still wanting more. Gratitude can make the future feel safer because it reminds you that your life is already capable of changing, expanding and surprising you.

If receiving feels uncomfortable, start small. Accept a compliment without deflecting it. Allow yourself to rest without filling the space with another task. Accept someone’s kindness without insisting you owe them something. Celebrate an achievement without immediately moving on to the next goal. Let good things land.

Today, ask yourself: What is already here that I once wished for? Then choose one thing and notice it, appreciate it, receive it and consider what it makes possible. Finally, ask: If I were genuinely available for more, what would I allow myself to receive today?

Your next level may not require you to become someone else. You may simply need to become more available for the life that is already beginning to meet you.
