The bookstore encounter

The bookstore encounter

Feb 21, 2025

Liam strolled through the aisles of his favorite bookstore, the steady patter of rain against the windows making the space feel even cozier. He wasn’t looking for anything in particular—just letting his next read find him.

That’s when he saw her.

She was standing near the fiction section, stretching on her toes, her fingers just barely brushing the spine of a book on the top shelf. He watched as she huffed in frustration, then tried again, determination clear on her face.

Liam smirked to himself before stepping forward. “Need a hand?”

Dani let out a small gasp, her body jolting slightly before she turned to face him. Then, realizing he wasn’t some random threat but just a tall stranger offering help, she laughed—a breathy, relieved sound that made him grin.

“Oh my goodness, you scared me,” she admitted, pressing a hand to her chest as she chuckled. “I wasn’t expecting anyone to sneak up on me in the middle of my greatest struggle.”

Liam chuckled. “Didn’t mean to startle you. But, you know, I couldn’t just stand by and watch you go through all that effort when I could reach it in two seconds.”

Dani huffed dramatically, a playful glint in her eyes. “I had it under control.”

He raised an eyebrow, amused. “Oh yeah? Looked like the book was winning.”

She sighed, shaking her head with mock defeat. “Fine. You may assist me.”

Liam grinned and easily grabbed the book off the shelf, handing it to her. As she took it, her eyes softened with recognition, and her fingers traced the title: The Fairest Beauty.

“This one must be special,” Liam noted, watching her expression shift into something nostalgic.

Dani smiled, nodding. “It is. The Fairest Beauty is the book that made me fall in love with romance novels. I read it years ago, and I guess I just wanted to revisit where it all started.” She let out a small, self-conscious laugh. “That probably sounds silly.”

Liam shook his head. “Not at all. I think the books that shape us deserve to be revisited as often as we want.”

Dani’s smile widened, a spark of excitement lighting up her face. “Right? It’s like stepping back into a world you love, but each time, you notice something new.”

Liam found himself watching her, completely drawn in. There was something so effortlessly charming about the way she spoke—reserved yet passionate, like she kept most of herself hidden but let her excitement shine through in little bursts. She wasn’t someone who demanded attention, yet she had his completely.

“I’m Liam, by the way,” he said, offering a friendly smile.

“Dani,” she replied, shifting the book under one arm and extending her hand.

He shook it, noting the warmth of her touch. “Well, Dani, since I’ve already done you the favor of retrieving The Fairest Beauty, how about you let me make another suggestion?”

She raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Oh? And what’s that?”

“A coffee,” he said smoothly. “Right now, right across the street. You can tell me all about this book and why it turned you into a hopeless romantic.” His tone was teasing, but the invitation was genuine.

Dani hesitated, biting her lip—a small, thoughtful gesture that Liam found oddly endearing. She wasn’t used to spontaneous moments like this, wasn’t used to saying yes to strangers. But something about Liam felt… safe. Easy. And if she was honest with herself, she wanted to say yes.

After a moment, she exhaled, her lips curling into a playful smile. “Alright. But only if you promise not to make fun of me for how many romance books I’ve read.”

Liam chuckled. “No promises. But I will buy you coffee.”

And just like that, the bookstore encounter turned into something more. As they sat across from each other, surrounded by the comforting hum of the café, conversation flowed effortlessly. Dani’s natural bubbliness began to shine, and Liam found himself loving every second of it. She had a way of bringing light to the moment without even trying, and he admired that about her.

By the end of their coffee, Liam knew one thing for certain—he had found something worth holding onto in the most unexpected place. And as for Dani?

Maybe romance wasn’t just meant for books after all.
