Multipotentiality and Polymathy: Making Sense of the Concepts and Vocabulary

Jan 16, 2024

I may not have written much but if you've read some of my work, you might have noticed that I'm an eager advocate of multipotentiality.

I was a teen searching for my purpose in life, and nothing felt enough to satisfy my ever-outbranching curiosity, until I found that there is a name (actually, many names) for what I am - a multipassionate, meaning, someone who has too many serious passions to limit themselves to the pursuit of just one of them - and even a community of people like me who are building a life around, not against, their nature.

A life that allows them to be all that they are, not just a tiny fraction.

A life that allows them to thrive and provide value and develop into generalists, multidisciplinary people, and polymaths.

Discovering this changed everything.

It meant I could be many things. That I could be me.

Multipotentiality and polymathy is not spoken enough about, in part due to societal norms and in part because most people are simply fine with being specialists as long as they have enough free time to devote to their personal life and hobbies. Thus, they don't even search for such an option, or they simply rule it out as impossible.

Because of this, the language used to discuss this kind of lifestyle is quite diverse and ambiguous. Therefore, in this article, I'd like to offer my own framework for understanding the concepts surrounding multipotentiality that I've encountered in my search for my own path.

You can read it on my Vocal.
