On 24 October 2026, the Metropolitan Police confirmed passing a letter containing allegations about Thomas Markle Sr to the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in January 2019. The force also confirmed that it had not shared the details with other law enforcement agencies.
As rabid commentators and Derangers rush to condemn Meghan for not ensuring the Met did their job, or for not going public with the information, an important piece of context is left out of the “conversation”. In January 2019, Harry and Meghan hadn’t yet established their separate household at Buckingham Palace. So passing the letter to “the Office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex” actually meant passing it to the shared office of the then-Cambridges and Sussexes at Kensington Palace.
The separate Sussex household was created after 15 March 2019 - an official announcement on that date confirmed that Harry and Meghan would create a new household “in the spring.”
The Met didn’t pass the information to an entirely separate Sussex operation in a different palace. It passed it to an office within the Kensington Palace household structure, which the Sussexes shared with Prince William and Kate Middleton. Jason Knauf, former aide to Prince William, was so confident that he was across what Meghan “knew” that he gave evidence against her in court, testifying that she knew a letter she wrote to Thomas Markle would be leaked.
The royal reporters all know this, of course. They just somehow keep neglecting to mention it when they demand answers about why Meghan didn’t do more. No such answers are being demanded of the men at Kensington Palace with actual power to do something, including the heir to the British throne.
If everyone did remember that William and Kate’s office was the same as Harry and Meghan’s office back when the letter was received, maybe the likes of Piers Morgan would be forced to be a little more considered in their commentary … and a little less likely to make insinuations about Meghan “not doing enough”.
