Meghan’s Been Unfairly Judged For Over Eight Years

Oct 23, 2026

imageFor more than eight years, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has been criticised for her estrangement from her father. Commentators have questioned her character, accused her of being cold-hearted and suggested that a good daughter would surely find a way to reconcile. Online trolls have turned a private family rupture into a public referendum on her worth.

Now, disturbing allegations have been reported.  On 22 October 2026, The Sun reported claims by Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr, that he had discovered suspected child sexual abuse material among his father’s belongings in the Philippines and reported it to the authorities. The FBI has reportedly acknowledged receiving his affidavit, and Philippine authorities are said to have established a specialist task force.

These are serious allegations. Thomas Markle Sr has denied them, describing the accusations as “sick lies”. No public forensic findings have established the nature or extent of the alleged material, and no charges have been announced. Any investigation must establish the facts, with children’s safety and dignity at its centre.

Meghan has now offered important context about her own experience. In a statement reported on 23 October, she said a letter containing “troubling and disturbing allegations” about her father was sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection in 2018. She said the letter was later shared with her and that she was assured the allegations were being investigated. She described her decision to remain distant as a means of protecting her children.

Meghan’s statement doesn’t establish that the 2018 letter concerned the specific material now alleged to have been found, nor does it tell us what the authorities knew or did. Those questions remain unanswered. But her account deserves to be taken seriously.

For years, the British press has devoted considerable attention to Meghan’s relationship with her father. The estrangement became a recurring storyline, with her refusal to reconcile often portrayed as evidence of a personal failing. Yet the possibility that she had serious, private reasons for maintaining that distance rarely seemed to receive comparable attention.

I’m not about to claim that journalists knew about the 2018 letter and deliberately concealed it; there’s currently no evidence to establish that. But the contrast is striking. There was apparently ample appetite to speculate about Meghan’s motives, criticise her choices and demand a reconciliation. But no unearthing of the reasons for her decision … and the British media’s famous anonymous sources - in the palace and the police - seem to have entirely failed them.

A parent isn’t automatically entitled to a relationship with an adult child. Nor does the public have a right to demand one. Family estrangement can follow broken trust, distressing experiences or concerns about children’s wellbeing. Outsiders rarely know the full story, and people shouldn’t have to reveal painful private information to justify a boundary.

There’s also a danger in making compassion conditional on the outcome of the current allegations. If the claims are substantiated, there must be accountability. If they are not, that would not automatically make Meghan’s decision to maintain distance unreasonable. Her right to decide what relationship, if any, is appropriate for her family doesn’t depend on proving the worst possible account of her father.

Above all, the children potentially affected by these allegations must not become incidental to a debate about a famous woman. The claims need proper investigation, not sensationalism or a rush to judgment.

For eight years, Meghan has been criticised for a distance the public could see, while the reasons behind it remained largely private. Her statement doesn’t answer every question - and she doesn’t owe us that - but it reminds us how little outsiders may know about another family’s reality.

The question wasn’t really ever about why Meghan failed to reconcile. It’s why so many people felt entitled to insist that she should.
