WHAT IS ALITAPTAP?
Alitaptap (the Filipino word for "firefly") is a citizen-science website that maps where fireflies have been seen around the world. Most sightings come from public open data on iNaturalist. The rest are logged by visitors to the site and reviewed before they appear on the map. It is free to use, available in 10 languages, and its sighting data is open to researchers under CC BY 4.0.

WHY IT MATTERS
Fireflies are disappearing in many places because of light pollution, habitat loss and pesticides. A map of where they have been seen, and where they have gone quiet, helps people find them, protect them and notice when they vanish. Many countries still have no sightings on the map. If you live in one, log a firefly and put your place on the map. 🌍

WHY I BUILT IT
My kids have never seen a real firefly. Alitaptap is a one-person project that earns nothing, but I'll keep building it, and next I want it to cover other endangered animals and support conservation initiatives.
