Hello, this is Jin.
This is the first episode of โKorean Stories with Jin.
Today, Iโll share a small story about Halloween.
I was born and raised in Korea.
When I was young, Halloween wasnโt as familiar in Korea as it is now.
Having Halloween parties with friends,
or going door to door handing out candyโ
I had almost never seen those things.
But when I turned thirty,
I ended up living in the United States.
When I first came to the United States,
everything felt new and unfamiliar.
The language was different,
peopleโs daily lives were different,
and even the neighborhoods looked different.
And then one autumn,
October arrived.
One day, while I was walking through the neighborhood,
I saw a big orange pumpkin in front of a house.
Some houses had ghosts,
and some had skeletons and spiderwebs.
At night, little lights twinkled in front of each house.
Seeing all of that, I quietly smiled to myself.
I thought, โAhโฆ I really did come to America.
And then Halloween night arrived.
There were witches,
there were princesses,
and there were kids dressed up as cute animals.
The children went from house to house
and shouted loudly,
โTrick or treat!
I smiled when I heard them say that.
And as I watched people giving candy to the children,
I felt a small warmth inside.
It was completely different from the Halloween I had seen in Korea when I was young
a very different scene.
That night, when I came home, I looked out the window.
The child I once was, growing up in Korea,
and the person I am now, who came to the U.S. at thirty,
felt connected in a single moment.
Halloween, which wasnโt anything special in Korea,
became a new memory for me here in the United States.
A culture that once felt unfamiliar
slowly, over time,
became a small part of my life.
Even now, when October comes,
and I see orange pumpkins along the street,
those memories come back to me.
And when children smile
โTrick or treat!
and I hear them say โTrick or treat!
Iโm reminded of the very first Halloween I experienced in the U.S.
When you live as an immigrant,
the small moments that once felt unfamiliar
eventually become precious memories.
Halloween is one of those moments for me.
The life that began for me in Korea
continued to create new stories here in the United States.
Thatโs all for todayโs story.
Thank you so much for listening to my first story.
For you too, there might be moments that felt unfamiliar at first
but later became something you grew to love.
Iโm curious about your stories as well.
I hope we can share our stories together.
Then, Iโll see you again in the next story.
