Hello, this is Jin. This is the first episode of “Korean Stories with Jin.” Today, I’ll share a small story about Halloween. I was born and raised in Korea. When I was young, Halloween wasn’t as familiar in Korea as it is now. 친구들과 할로윈 파티를 하거나, Having Halloween parties with friends, 집집마다 사탕을 나누어 주는 모습도 or going door to door handing out candy— 거의 본 적이 없었어요. I had almost never seen those things. But when I turned thirty, I ended up living in the United States. When I first came to the United States, 모든 것이 새롭고 낯설었어요. everything felt new and unfamiliar. 언어도 다르고, The language was different, 사람들의 생활도 다르고, people’s daily lives were different, 동네의 모습도 달랐어요. and even the neighborhoods looked different. 그리고 어느 가을, And then one autumn, 10월이 되었어요. October arrived. One day, while I was walking through the neighborhood, I saw a big orange pumpkin in front of a house. 어떤 집에는 유령이 있었고, Some houses had ghosts, 어떤 집에는 해골과 거미줄이 있었어요. and some had skeletons and spiderwebs. At night, little lights twinkled in front of each house. Seeing all of that, I quietly smiled to myself. I thought, “Ah… I really did come to America.” And then Halloween night arrived. 마녀도 있었고, There were witches, 공주도 있었고, there were princesses, 귀여운 동물로 변장한 아이들도 있었어요. and there were kids dressed up as cute animals. The children went from house to house 큰 소리로 말했어요. and shouted loudly, “Trick or treat!” I smiled when I heard them say that. And as I watched people giving candy to the children, I felt a small warmth inside. It was completely different from the Halloween I had seen in Korea when I was young— 아주 다른 모습이었어요. a very different scene. That night, when I came home, I looked out the window. The child I once was, growing up in Korea, 서른 살에 미국으로 온 지금의 내가 and the person I am now, who came to the U.S. at thirty, 한순간에 이어지는 것 같았어요. felt connected in a single moment. Halloween, which wasn’t anything special in Korea, 미국에서는 제 새로운 추억이 되었어요. became a new memory for me here in the United States. A culture that once felt unfamiliar 시간이 지나면서 slowly, over time, 조금씩 제 삶의 한 부분이 된 거예요. became a small part of my life. Even now, when October comes, 길에서 주황색 호박을 보면 and I see orange pumpkins along the street, 그때의 기억이 떠올라요. those memories come back to me. And when children smile “Trick or treat!”이라고 말하는 소리를 들으면 and I hear them say “Trick or treat!” I’m reminded of the very first Halloween I experienced in the U.S. When you live as an immigrant, 처음에는 낯설었던 작은 순간들이 the small moments that once felt unfamiliar 나중에는 소중한 추억이 되는 것 같아요. eventually become precious memories. Halloween is one of those moments for me. The life that began for me in Korea 미국에서 새로운 이야기를 만들어 갔으니까요. continued to create new stories here in the United States.
