When a meteor about a metre and a half wide entered the air over New England at 14:06 Eastern Daylight Time on 30 May 2026, houses shook from Massachusetts to Rhode Island and a double boom was heard from Delaware to Montreal. NASA first said the object had fragmented about forty miles up over northeast Massachusetts and southeast New Hampshire, with energy near 300 tons of TNT. GOES-19’s lightning mapper saw the flash. The American Meteor Society’s Robert Lunsford, taking dozens of reports, called it bigger than a normal fireball, about a yard across, and likely to have burned or fallen at sea.

A later NASA update put the stone at about five feet, 1.6 metres, mass 5.6 metric tons, speed about 42,000 miles an hour. It ran northwest to southeast for twenty-six miles and broke at thirty-one miles altitude, dropping meteorites into Cape Cod Bay. The yield was revised to about 230 tons of TNT. Allard Beutel of NASA had already said the body was natural rock, not a satellite. The United States Geological Survey called the shaking a widely felt sonic boom from a suspected bolide, not an earthquake. Massachusetts emergency officials reported no police or fire emergency from the blast. Cloud covered much of the region; many heard the boom who never saw the light. An observer in Middleton heard a sound from above like a sonic boom rather than thunder.

The same Saturday the wider war with Iran was already eating its ceasefire. Through late May American strikes on Iranian sites had continued under a truce Washington still named as holding. On 25 and 27 May United States aircraft hit targets on the southern Iranian coast. On 28 May talks to extend the ceasefire awaited a presidential decision. Bloomberg’s 30 May file recorded Americans hurt in Kuwait as mixed signals went out about the war. The fireball over Massachusetts was not a weapon. NASA said so. Those who stack dates kept a daylight burst equal to hundreds of tons of TNT over the American northeast in the same hours a ceasefire was being broken in the Gulf.

In addition to the Cape Cod fall, the papers had a numbered blast. First estimate 300 tons, later 230; altitude first 64 kilometres, then 31 miles. The physical fact was a Saturday afternoon bolide and a sonic boom across New England. Watchers who read sky against nations treated the meteor as a sign over the United States the day the truce strained.
