I created this calculator because I wanted to make art a bigger part of my future—not just as a passion, but as something that could stand on its own and support itself. I knew my print club could be a way to share my work consistently, connect with people who believe in it, and build a foundation for what comes next.
But I also knew this: it wasn’t enough for it to just be fun. I needed to understand the math behind it. Could this project cover its own costs? Could it grow in a way that was sustainable for me and my family?
That’s what this worksheet helps me (and now you!) answer.
I started by looking at what it costs to create and ship a print each month—paper, ink, envelopes, postage, even my time. Then I layered in the fixed business costs that don’t change month to month. Finally, I accounted for the pesky percentages that get skimmed off the top (processing fees, taxes, platform cuts).
From there, I could work backwards:
- If I charge this much for a membership, and each member costs me that much to serve, how many members do I need to break even?
- How many members do I need to cover my full monthly cash goal?
- And what happens if I grow to 50, 150, or even 500 members?
I added in capacity checks, too—because it matters how much time it actually takes to pack envelopes, drop them in the mail, and keep the joy in the process. This isn’t just about numbers; it’s about building something you can actually keep up with.
The result? I now have a clear picture of what it will take to make my print club sustainable and scalable. And with that clarity, I can grow it with confidence.
I want the same for you. This calculator is here to help you strip away the mystery, test scenarios, and make decisions you can stand behind.
So dive in. Play with the numbers. Imagine what’s possible. This is how we make the math math.
With love & foresight,
Jennifer
