Graded Brown Belt!

Graded Brown Belt!

Today marks a major milestone in my journey... I officially graded to brown belt in Shukokai karate.

Funnily enough, this puts me exactly where I was when I was 9 years old grading to brown for the first time… but back then, it was in Shotokan. Coming back to this level as an adult feels different - more intentional, more humbling, and definitely more rewarding.

I’m incredibly proud of all my classmates who graded alongside me today (especially my grading buddy Lindsay), and seeing our Sensei beaming with pride in the corner was such a highlight. Since this grading was hosted by our Brentwood dojo’s Sensei, it was a treat to get new eyes on my technique, and yes, he totally picked up on my lingering Shotokan habits (classic me!). I was grateful for the detailed feedback, sometimes it’s those nit-picky corrections that help push us to the next level.

We also had to demonstrate some kumite during the grading - not so much tournament-style, but enough to show we could flow through a range of techniques. And with only 30 seconds of fighting, let’s just say… I have the bruise to prove it.

Apparently someone landed a solid kick to my leg (unknowingly!), and now I’ve got a nice reminder of how full-tilt we all went. Honestly? Worth it.

Now begins the long, focused stretch toward black belt (Sho-dan)... a journey of about a year and a half.

I’m ready for it.

I’m excited.

And I’m deeply grateful to still be on this path.
