"My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for the king." - Psalm 45:1
Father of every nation,
forgive our racism.
Don’t just forgive it
and still let it be.
Dig it up
where it's buried deeper
than we can see.
We don’t like to admit it,
but it's somewhere in the roots
of nearly every family tree.
It is the inherited sin
that fuels hate and bigotry.
It would be
an astonishing act of repentance
if we were honest enough to say it:
“I am a racist — but I don’t want to be.”
Then
we can depend on your incarnation
as a Jewish man—
the Rock of Salvation
for people with every kind of skin.
Help us look inside all people
and see others
as souls you made,
love, and invigorate
by wrapping them
in different colors.
Amen.
