So Miss Cherry was the only one in the village with a mango tree so sweet. People used to say it was magic. Every summer, children would pass by her gate hoping one ripe mango would fall.

So, welcome to Your Jamaican Dose, the podcast that spices up your English learning with a tropical twist. My name is Monifa, your Jamaican ESL coach here to help you speak English with confidence and Caribbean vibe. Whether you're relaxing in the breeze or not, let's level up your English together. So, let's dive in.

So today we're doing something extra sweet, a little island story time. So I'm going to read just a quick short story and you'll get to read along, repeat after me and practice pronunciations and emotions. And guess what? You can follow along with the story in the show notes.

So if you like reading while listening, that can help, or you can feel free to come join Buy Me a Coffee

this and other resources, which I will link in the show notes below. All right, ready? So I want you to take a deep breath, breathe in, breathe out, and let's get into it. ⁓

So our mini story is called Miss Cherry's Mango Tree. All right. So I'm going to read the full story first, and then we break it down together, and you can repeat after me to practice your pronunciations. So here it goes.

So Miss Cherry was the only one in the village with a mango tree so sweet. People used to say it was magic. Every summer, children would pass by her gate hoping one ripe mango would fall.

But Miss Cherry didn't like sharing. She'd shout, go away, my mangoes are not for you. One day,

A little boy named Keno stood under the tree and whispered, please, Miss Cherry, my mother is sick. She loves mangoes. Miss Cherry looked at the boy, then at the golden fruit hanging low. She sighed, picked two and said, take it. But next time, come and ask.

Don't wait for a mango to drop on your head. See? Very short, but we're going to go into the details of the story. All right. Time to practice your pronunciation, your rhythm, your emotion while practicing English. So I'll read one sentence at a time and you can repeat after me. Ready?

Let's do it. Miss Cherry was the only one in the village with a mango tree so sweet.

Good. People used to say it was magic.

Every summer, children would pass by her gate.

hoping one ripe mango would fall.

But, Miss Cherry didn't like Sherry.

Sheed shout go away. My mango is not for you

Notice the emotion with that one. One day, a little boy named Keno stood under the tree.

and whispered, please, Miss Cherry, my mother is sick. She loves mangoes. Notice the tone for that one.

Miss Cherry looked at the boy, then at the golden fruit hanging low.

She sighed.

picked two and said, take it, but next time come and ask.

Don't wait for a mango to drop on your head.

All right, good job guys.

So just a quick little vocabulary tip here or more grammar, a mix. So there was a little play on words there where we heard about the mango, you know, dropping on your head. Don't wait for it to drop on your head. That's really like an idiom, which means that you shouldn't wait too long to expect a miracle to happen. Right. Sometimes you just got to take action.

So here's what I want you to do. Practice.

Record yourself reading the story. I'll put it in the description. Or you could try the app called ElsaSpeak, which is where you get real time pronunciation feedback. I personally love it. It helps to help you with your tone and it helps you sound a lot more natural in minutes, actually, with continued practice, though.

So I'll link all of that in the show notes. And if you want to also improve your grammar while writing your own stories, then Grammarly is the ideal one for you. It even gives you tone suggestions so your writing sounds confident and correct.

Now, if you record yourself reading Miss Cherry's Mango Tree and send it to me at yourjamaicandose at gmail.com or DM me on Instagram at yourjamaicandose that is at Y-O-U-R. ⁓

J-A-M-A-I-C-A-N-D-O-S-E. Good. Or at JA English Coach, I'll feature the best reads in next week's episode. All right? So big up yourself for reading along with me today on your Jamaican jokes. If you smiled, stumbled, or even learned something new,
