About The Real Marty Supreme
Film
What is the true story of the man who inspired the film Marty Supreme? I met the real Marty when he visited Manchester, England, over 20 years ago and immediately thought his was a story worth telling. I'd recently left BBC TV where I was a producer/director/correspondent to set up on my own, so with my film crew of Kevin Roberts on camera and Peter Skeaping-Brown on sound I travelled to New York and spent the best part of a week with the real Marty, getting him to talk frankly about his life and his adventures on and off the ping pong table including things they didn't mention in the movie, like his days smuggling gold in the Far East. He showed us how he did it. We talked to Marty's wife Yoshiko, his lifelong friend the comedian Jackie Mason, nightclub owner Ruby Alabama and a wonderful cast of NY characters. If you loved the Timothee Chalamet film directed by Josh Safdie you'll want to know more about the real Marty. This is it. Sadly we never found a TV outlet for our film - there weren't many options in those days - so apart from some VHS copies which we ran off for the US Hardbat Association this has never been seen. It also meant we made no money at all; in fact the venture cost us. So I'm delighted to be proved right - the Marty Reisman Story IS a captivating tale, and if you enjoy this true film, please do buy me a coffee! - Charlie Lambert, Liverpool, England.
