Scusa or mi dispiace?

Scusa or mi dispiace?

Apr 26, 2026

Quick question: if you bump into someone in Italy, do you say scusa or mi dispiace?

If you're not sure, you're not alone. This is one of those things nobody explains properly.

I wrote a full post on it this week — with a comparison table, a mini dialogue, and a tip about how Italians use mi dispiace in ways that might surprise you.

In case you missed it

Here's what I've been putting out on YouTube lately:

🎬 [At the Italian Deli](https://youtu.be/OHtdJzK2VPM)

A real conversation at the alimentari — listen first, then it's your turn. The customer's lines go silent and you take over. A1 level.

🎬 [English words used in Italian with a different meaning](https://youtu.be/ztdxc7QCHF0)

Footing. Smoking. Baby. These look like English words. In Italian they mean something completely different.

🎬 [Italian vocabulary: at the doctor's](https://youtu.be/ZDj3_qOC9a0)

Useful words for one of those situations where you really need to communicate clearly.

🎬 [At the bakery](https://youtu.be/uCb_9F7Bxtk)

Another real conversation practice — this time at the panificio.

🎬 [Stop memorising Italian. Do this instead.](https://youtu.be/uCv7sXeEWs0)

If flashcards aren't working for you, watch this one.

A presto,

Sarah
