What are 5 everyday things that bring you happiness?

When I first read this prompt, my reaction was immediate. Five everyday things that bring me happiness?

  1. Art

  2. Creative writing

  3. Poetry

  4. Photography

  5. Graphic Design

But as I thought more on it, something slowly occurred to me.

There is no doubt that creative pursuits bring me happiness. I took much joy from painting the above digital watercolour artwork, which I’ve named “Spectator”. I couldn’t deny that if I tried.

Yet, these are only a few of the many, many things that bring me happiness every day. Things that I sometimes take for granted. Small things that I’m grateful for when I reflect on them, but which get overlooked in day to day life. Big things that become part of the wallpaper with time. The things in between, which know no size or form.

I’m eternally grateful for my loved ones. I’m grateful to have a roof over my head, which not everyone has. I’m grateful to be warm on a freezing cold winter night, to have food to nourish myself with, and to have a safe environment to live in.

I’m grateful for the emotional support I receive when I’m down, the medical treatment I get when I’m unwell, and the rest I’m able to take when I’m exhausted.

And I’m grateful for the evening sky, with its secret, mystical colours. I’m grateful for the tiny drops of dew on grass that hold entire universes inside them. The way the breeze turns autumn leaves into music, the blossoms that transform summer gardens into Monet paintings.

The van Gogh night, and the Beethoven moon.

The spark of understanding in a stranger’s eyes.

I’m grateful for all of these things, but sometimes I forget to feel that gratitude.

I’d love to fix that.

If I could sprinkle gratitude into a locket and wear it as a pendant around my neck, I would.

Every time I see the sunset or feel the love of an animal companion, I would press the locket, and it would glow like something out of a magical girl anime, releasing a moonglow of gratitude.

I don’t have that locket, but I can still try.

I can make an effort to feel happiness when it’s due, even if only for a few minutes a day.

Like a gratitude session, where the outcome is healing and joy.

It will be my magic pendant.

My gratitude in a locket.
