Introducing: Sean Lippin - June Issue

Jun 12, 2024

Born and raised in the lower Hudson valley region of New York, Sean Lippin writes and sings original songs that reflect his environment and unique experiences. Sean’s love for music burgeoned when he discovered the electric guitar at 13 years of age. After listening to Green Day’s “American Idiot”, he was inspired to commit and dedicate his life to rock music and all that it entails. Falling in love with the poetry and eclectics of rock n’ roll, he took private lessons and participated in various ensembles at the Lagond School of Music to further develop and hone his songwriting and musical proficiency.

Where can we find you right now and what are you up to?

I’m based in NYC and the Capital Region of NY! I’ve just released a single called “Run Away” and am playing a bunch of shows to promote it!

Tell us a bit about your influences.

I love the songwriting styles of Tom Petty, Neutral Milk Hotel, John Mayer and the energy and spirit of Grateful Dead, Phish, Dave Matthews Band, Jimi Hendrix and Vampire Weekend.

How did you start?

I believe that playing your songs in front of an audience is the key to developing them. I always pursue the opportunity to play new material at open mics and booked shows to get the most out of a song I’m writing.

What obstacles does an emerging artist have to face in our time?

The biggest obstacle in our time is standing out in an oversaturated market. The music industry is as exciting as ever with such little barrier to entry that anyone can begin a music career using their cell phone. The artist’s angle and vibe is what will set them apart from other artists.

What worked for you marketing-wise?

Writing good music is key! Thinking through the details of the inner workings of the song - such as rhythm and word flow. A good song allows everything else to fall into place creatively.

What advice or tips would you give to new artists?

Be able to do as much on your own as possible: Learn every instrument, learn how to mix, write lyrics, learn every genre, learn how to edit video, and learn some Photoshop skills. It’s important to gain enough knowledge so that you can speak the language of those working to elevate you! Also always be open-minded and flexible, and never take anything too seriously!

What are your goals? Where do you see yourself in five years?

My goals are for my songs to connect with listeners. My words to resonate and help people see the world positively through a different lens. In five years, I hope to further build this community and help spread cheer and love.

Tell us about your latest or upcoming release.

My newest single “Run Away” is a heartfelt exploration of the universal desire to escape the pressures of modern life and find solace in freedom. This particular song channels feelings of openness and honesty with a slight edginess and touch of humor in the lyrics. “Run Away” is a reminder to follow your heart and escape reality fearlessly.
