Introducing: Mo Bedick - November Issue

Nov 18, 2023

Where can we find you right now and what are you up to?

On the couch in my home city of Rotterdam the Netherlands, I just picked up a TooGoodToGo box from a hotel round the corner and I ate enough cold scrambled eggs to feed a family of four.

Tell us a bit about your influences.

It all differs per person actually. I, grew up with a lot of LA surfer punk style like FIDLAR, Together Pangea and a lot of classics like Pink Floyd and Carole King. Our drummer and bass player Cors & Koen are Future Jazz, hiphop and $&B influenced bringing fast Yussef Dayes rhythms, D’Angelo grooves and math rock-like rhythms. And then we have our can-do-it-all guitarist/pianist/synth guy who lays down incredible chord progressions derived from his love for Japanese 80’s soul/funk/jazz.

How did you start?

Years ago it started as a solo recording project when I was a teenager in my bedroom back home, but that’s long gone now. We’re a full, all-writing, jam band that writes 20-minute jams into 3 minute songs.

What obstacles does an emerging artist have to face in our time?

I have to be almost more busy with your social media page than your music, and mainly how much of a lottery it feels like. A lot of the best bands never make it because they don’t have the TikTok dances ready. We go along, adapt and create content, we like to do it as well, but it shouldn’t matter that much.

What worked for you marketing-wise? What advice or tips would you give to new artists?

Keep pushing. All the time. Not just content online, it shouldn’t matter. It’s really all about network. Go to shows, talk to people, e-mail, cold call, make friends along the way, and enjoy the ride.

What are your goals? Where do you see yourself in five years?

We don’t ask for much, we want to do a small European/UK tour soon and our main goal is to play our favorite festival in the Netherlands: Best Kept Secret. Should be doable: aim for the stars but be happy in the stratosphere.

Tell us about your latest or upcoming release.

We’ve released 3 singles for our debut album that’s coming in 2024. There is more music coming soon, with 2 more singles in the pipeline. We like albums, concept albums, full-length. That’s why our album is like that: planned, and thought out, with a line, motives and a vision. But in this day and age, only a small percentage listen to the full album. That’s why we decided to do so many singles, to keep it digestible but show off all our different sides: from “Rewire” our more upfront indie tight psych rock to “1848”, our technical, math rock/hip-hop tune with our French MC friend Kleine Prins Lior.
