Introducing: Black Box Recovery - August Issue

Aug 12, 2023

Where can we find you right now and what are you up to?

Physically, we're out of Portland, Maine. We're gigging and trying to finish recording our upcoming EP, Better Angels with Jay Maas of Defeater as our engineer/producer.

Tell us a bit about your influences.

There a plenty because all five of us come from slightly different backgrounds. The ones that may come through sonically would be: Glassjaw, Thrice, Coheed and Cambria, Rise Against, Killswitch Engage, and La Dispute.

How did you start?

Adam K. has been playing guitar with Nate Atienza for over 15 years. They had a band in high school known as, Introducing... After the other members left for school, they started searching to fill the roster. They joined forces with Dylan Burrows in college. After about 15 member changes and several years, the trio finally landed Blaine Sawyer and Turner Kelsey.

What obstacles does an emerging artist have to face in our time?

After you find your sound, it's difficult getting it out to the right people. Also, doing everything yourself costs a lot of money.

What worked for you marketing-wise? What advice or tips would you give to new artists?

Social networking with other indie artists has been fruitful. Regardless of genre, other creators are more than willing to help showcase your material, as long as you're willing to return the favor. Also, starting and maintaining good relations with other bands you play shows with is helpful. Mainly because if they or you need help filling a bill for a potential gig, you can lean on each other.

Our advice would be: don't be afraid to put yourself and your material out there. You never know who it will resonate with.

What are your goals? Where do you see yourself in five years?

Our goals are to finish our EP, Better Angels, continue playing more shows, growing our social circle, and meeting more new fans. Five years from now, we'll be touring and working on recording new material.

Tell us about your latest or upcoming release.

We just released Rose Colored Glasses on 8/4/23, our second single off of Better Angels. Last year we dropped the first single, Fever Dreams. In between, we released our first music video for Heartsfall. Better Angels, in it's entirety, will be out by the middle of 2024
