How To Move Beyond "Controlling" Student Behavior [Classroom Cooperation Series]

Aug 02, 2023

A new episode of the Sincerely Yours, Intentional Teach podcast is now available!

Episode 08 Beyond Controlling Behavior To Obtain Compliance is the first episode in my Classroom Cooperation Series. This first e # # pisode will share some of my observations and experience with the concept of "punishment" and our efforts to use it to obtain compliance.

While sometimes punishment (or the threat of it) can work to correct behavior in the short-term,

1) it has its pitfalls (and even "dangers")

2) there are better ways to achieve cooperation (which is our ultimate goal!)

While I have always valued a positive classroom environment and building-relationships has been a strength of mine (after an admittedly very rocky first year start!), I know I was surprised upon reflection at how often I really fell back on punishments and consequences to obtain compliance in my classroom. As I began to rethink learning - and shift away from a "compliance as learning" mindset and toward a "partnership model" of education - I realized this reliance on consequences when negative-behaviors arose was ultimately holding back the 5-10% of students (perhaps more today!) for whom punishment doesn't work for anyway.

I hope this episode encourages you to think, reflect, and then continue your teaching adventure with even greater intention and awareness.
