Boost Your DUPR: Why IPN Minis Matter

Boost Your DUPR: Why IPN Minis Matter

Oct 13, 2026

imageA friend of mine recently asked me if playing in the weekly InPickle Nation mini tournaments at TapNPaddles would help her husband increase his DUPR. I gave her the same answer that I give everyone: YES--they can help his DUPR--but only if he performs better than expected against the other participants.

All results from the weekly IPN minis are sent to DUPR at the end of the event, meaning the matches count toward your DUPR rating.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Every DUPR-rated match can affect your rating, either positively or negatively. DUPR updates ratings based on match results and the ratings of your opponents.

  • Beating players who are rated higher than you or performing better than expected against your opponents can significantly increase your DUPR. However, a win does not always result in a higher rating. If your opponents are rated lower than you, or if you win by a smaller margin than expected, your rating could remain unchanged or even decrease. For example, if the algorithm expected you to win by five points but you narrowly won 11-9, the result may be considered below expectations.

  • Similarly, losing to players rated lower than you will likely result in a decrease in DUPR, but losing in general doesn't always mean a decrease. If you lose to players who are rated much higher but score more points than expected, your rating could actually increase.

  • The mini tournaments are a great way to build a more accurate DUPR because you typically play multiple matches with a variety of partners and opponents during a single event. The IPN minis at TapNPaddles include round-robin play followed by a bracket, generating several match results that are submitted to DUPR. However, it's important to remember that "more accurate" does not necessarily mean "higher." As additional match data is collected, your rating may increase, decrease, or remain unchanged depending on how your performance compares to the level reflected by your current DUPR.

  • One unique aspect of the mini tournaments is the opportunity to play with a variety of partners, which can be both an advantage and a challenge. Competing alongside different players helps create a more reliable DUPR rating by providing a broader sample of match data. At the same time, it requires you to adapt to different playing styles, communication preferences, and skill levels. In some cases, a lack of chemistry with a partner can make it more difficult to achieve the result you were hoping for, even if you play well individually.

For someone trying to improve their DUPR:

  • Play in the division that best matches your skill level whenever possible. While that isn't always an option in the IPN minis, a good strategy for players looking to improve and accurately track their DUPR is to participate in tournaments that report results to DUPR and offer age- and skill-based divisions. These events typically allow you to compete against players with similar experience and ability levels, providing a more meaningful measure of your performance and rating progression.

  • Focus on consistency rather than just winning. Your DUPR can increase after a loss if you outperform expectations so focus on consistently beating your own performance instead of just winning the game.

  • The more quality match data you accumulate, the more stable and reliable your DUPR rating becomes. As additional match results are recorded, DUPR gains a clearer picture of your true skill level. While this may cause your rating to increase, decrease, or remain steady, a more accurate rating provides a better benchmark for measuring improvement and tracking your progress over time.

Bottom line:

Age- and skill-based tournaments, played with a consistent partner you've chosen and practiced with, generally provide the best environment for increasing your DUPR. However, those opportunities may not always be available. In that case, the IPN mini tournament format offers an excellent alternative for players who want more DUPR-rated match experience without having to wait for larger events.

The weekly IPN minis provide several advantages, especially for players looking to build or improve their DUPR rating:

  • Multiple DUPR-rated matches in a single event.

  • Competition against a variety of opponents, creating a broader sample of match data.

  • Opportunities to play with different partners, which can improve the reliability of your rating over time.

  • A structured, competitive environment that more closely resembles tournament play.

  • Frequent opportunities to monitor progress and track changes in your DUPR.

While larger age- and skill-based tournaments remain the gold standard for benchmarking your performance, the IPN minis offer a convenient and valuable way to gain competitive experience, accumulate rated matches, and develop a more accurate DUPR profile throughout the year.
