Something of a classic and top entertainment for those who came to the Sycamores in Bramhope yesterday. It was truly a feast of rugby, with no fewer than three senior matches during the afternoon. West Park Leeds Women kicked off first and were victorious against Lichfield. The club’s men rounded off the afternoon and sandwiched between them came Leeds Tykes, against Bishop’s Stortford.
The visitors had the better of the first forty and held a lead at the break. Tykes’ supporters were still optimistic though, their side playing with the wind and slightly downhill in the second half. And their team is a very good one of course. They’d already shown signs of a recovery, crossing the line twice through Matt Salisbury on the left (above) and, just before half time, Kristan Dobson (below) on the right.
Fan positivity proved correct, as after the break their side took hold of the game, scoring several tries in quick succession, leaving the visitors somewhat stunned. No. 14 Albert Bradshaw notched up two tries and scrum half Ewan Laughton made a dramatic run through the middle to score right in front of me. Bishop’s Stortford were never out of it though, and the Tykes defence held off several dangerous attacks before the final whistle. The final score reflected how close the encounter had been: 36-31.
I hope the pictures give some idea as to how exciting the game was. On several occasions Tykes players left the ground entirely in their speed and athleticism. Very dramatic. Well done to all, a hugely enjoyable afternoon.
