For the most part, another exhilarating performance from Doncaster Knights brought a bonus point home win against Ampthill yesterday. Such was the ferocity of the home side’s attack that they were three converted tries ahead before the visitors had time to breathe.
However, as we all know, while such a cushion is most welcome, it doesn’t guarantee a win at the final whistle. Ampthill recovered enough to score themselves not too long before half time, bringing them hope that the result wasn’t quite over and done with. Two more tries following the break increased that hope as the gap closed to nine points. Thankfully for home fans, a John Kelly try relieved any pressure on the Knights as they coasted to at 35-19 win. A much better description of proceedings can be found here.
A highlight for ickledot was the first half try scored by Joe Margetts. Apart from being an excellent ‘try-of-the-week’ score, it was also one that ickledot managed to capture in a burst of shots, almost all in focus. The one above shows him fending off the final defender while below we see him leaping over another earlier in the move. This was the second of several defenders beaten, to the delight of onlookers. There are other shots from the try and more photos to be seen here.
It was great also to grab a word with Ampthill’s captain, hero and renowned podcaster, Charlie Mitchell. Here he is looking a bit fierce, but actually he was a very friendly chap.
