Second afternoon of rugby 7s for ickledot this summer, the host club this time being Ilkley. As regular readers will know, ickledot’s been to this event several times, going back to 2017. It’s probably the most well established 7s tournament in the area. Despite the weather being changeable and degrees cooler than recent days, there was a good crowd in attendance.
The fact that the Euros are on at the moment reminded ickledot of the 2018 version of Ilkley 7s, when play was interrupted so everyone could watch England play (and win) in the World Cup on the big screen. Thankfully England were not playing this time so no interruptions.
As you would expect, the rugby was fast and dramatic, culminating in some hard fought finals as the event came to a close. Of those which ickledot saw, there was success for Psychos (for the third consecutive time, according to the number of fingers they were all holding up in their team photo), Bradford Grammar School Old Boys, Ilkley Colts, a team playing in white (whose try produced ickledot’s favourite action pic of the day - see below) and Doncaster Demons, a women’s team.
Speaking of the women’s teams, unfortunately, that Demons final was the only women’s rugby ickledot saw on the main pitch all afternoon. He apologises to all the women’s teams who were there - he should have moved around more!
