With plans for healthcare professionals to visit UK schools to teach children how to deal with common ailments and first aid procedures, how would you cope if something were to happen?

If someone is injured you should:

·         First check that you and the injured person are not in any danger and, if possible, make the situation safe.

·         If necessary dial 999 for an ambulance (112 in Europe) when it is safe to do so

·         Carry out basic first aid

CALL THE EMERGENCY SERVICES – ring 999/112 and get help

ANAPHYLAXIS SHOCK

4. What is the first method of treating a heavily bleeding wound which has no embedded objects in the wound area?
APPLY PRESSURE TO THE WOUND (WITH A CLEAN DRESSING)

5. If a body part has been severed, what should you NOT do?
a. Place it in crushed ice ensuring it does not come into direct contact with the ice
b. Wash it
c. Wrap it in cling film or a plastic bag
d. Transport it with the person to hospital

B. WASH IT (Wrap the item in cling film before placing it in ice)

6. What material is recommended for covering a burn that has been cooled before transport to hospital?
CLING FILM or a non fluffy dressing

7. Before attempting abdominal thrusts, (the Heimlich procedure), on a choking adult, how many back blows between the person’s shoulder blades with the heel of your hand should be attempted to dislodge the blockage?
FIVE (Then perform up to five abdominal thrusts – if blockage is still there call 999/112 and say the person is choking, continuing back blows and abdominal thrusts until help arrives)

8. If you suspect someone is experiencing an electric shock what is the first course of action?
TURN OFF THE ELECTRICAL SUPPLY

9. What are the symptoms of a heart attack?
a. Chest pain
b. Sensation of squeezing, tightness of pressure

(If possible, get the person to sit down with their knees bent and their head and shoulders supported. Give them 300mg of aspirin to chew slowly or help them with their own medication (such as angina tablets) if they have it. Call 999/112 immediately)

10. What does the acronym FAST stand for when looking for signs of stroke in a person?
FACE – It may droop to one side or they may not be able to smile
ARMS – May not be able lift both arms and keep them there
SPEECH – Slurred or garbled speech
TIME – Call 999/112 as soon as possible
