À propos Hugh Pope
New ideas for better democracy – and long-distance hikes
For four decades, I wrote about Turkey, the Middle East and Central Asia as an international correspondent, author of books and International Crisis Group analyst.
One thing my career makes me sceptical about is elections and politicians. So now I love nothing better than spreading new ideas about an alternative: deliberative democracy. In particular, I work to popularise citizens' assemblies, randomly selected groups of ordinary people from a community or country who take briefings, deliberate and agree on policies in the public interest.
To relax, I like nothing better than a new long-distance trail, particularly one that can be done over time in short or even one-day stages. I enjoy the planning, the walking, the photographing, the writing it up afterwards and then the sharing.
Any support will go towards helping me blaze these new trails.
