Welcome to my blog!

imageIn 1984, sociologist Sarah Lawrence-Lightfoot coined a term that would forever change how we think about personal narratives: "portraiture." It's a method of capturing the complexity of human experience through story. I've been thinking about this concept lately, particularly after a film director told me something both obvious and profound: "There is power in sharing your story."

Here's what fascinates me: I'm technically young, but I've lived what anthropologists might call "multiple social lives" - the kind of existence that makes actuaries scratch their heads and recalculate their probability tables. I've found myself on presidential private yachts and in border-crossing mishaps across 60 countries. I've been both a law-abiding citizen and, occasionally, someone who's tested the elasticity of legal boundaries.

But that's not the interesting part.

What's interesting is how we categorize experiences. Most people file their lives into neat little boxes: career, family, adventures. Mine sprawl across continents and contexts like a Jackson Pollock painting - messy, intentional, and somehow making perfect sense when you step back far enough.

Think about it this way: When anthropologist Victor Turner studied tribal rituals, he discovered something he called "liminality" - those in-between spaces where transformation happens. My life has been one extended liminal space, a continuous state of becoming something else. It's like being a permanent tourist in your own biography.

This blog is my attempt to make sense of it all. Not just for me, but for you too. Because here's what I've learned: The best stories aren't just tales to be told; they're mirrors that reflect back our own potential for extraordinary lives.

(This is a free blog, but like any good social experiment, voluntary contributions are welcome and appreciated. Consider it an investment in narrative capital.)
