BATROBE LIVE
Hey there, dog parents! It’s me, your holistic, trauma-informed behavior consultant. Yes, in my bathrobe. Because why not? Life’s too short not to be comfy while we chat about our favorite subject: our beloved dogs!
Now, you’re probably wondering, ‘What interesting insights do you have for us today?’ Well, I’m glad you asked. We’re diving deep into the fascinating world of rewards, and no, I’m not talking about treats and belly rubs only.
We’ll explore how our understanding of rewards can profoundly impact the way we interact with and train our dogs. Trust me, this will give you a fresh perspective on those cute, sometimes challenging, often hilarious behaviors your furry companions exhibit. So, grab a cup of coffee or tea, settle down with your pup, and let’s get this show on the road!
In the video I discuss the dimensions in the context of rewards, I’m referring to different aspects or characteristics that rewards can have.
These include:
1. Sociality: The extent to which the reward involves social interaction or recognition.
2. Tangibility: Whether the reward is something physical and tangible, or something more abstract or intangible.
3. Primacy: This refers to whether the reward is a primary reward (something inherently valuable, like food or social praise), or a secondary reward (something valuable because it's associated with a primary reward, like high value food enrichment ).
4. Proximity: How immediately the reward is given following the behavior.
5. Duration: How long the rewarding effect of the reward lasts.
6. Familiarity: Whether the reward is something familiar or novel.
7. Naturalness: Whether the reward is something naturally occurring in the environment, or something artificially created.
8. Magnitude: The size or extent of the reward. Think secure attachment here.
Understanding these dimensions can help us design better reward systems for training dogs, or for any type of behavior modification.
