We're continuing our weekly streak with another fresh live track from the 'Qisma' album launch in April.
When creating a live setlist, it's important to me that it draws upon all eras of HeKz, and we aim to include at least one song from each album. Recently, that has extended to the pre-Tabula Rasa releases as collected on the 'Initio' CD, as I was quite curious to see how those early compositions would sound with the current line-up.
'When Darkness Falls' is the current offering from our Jurassic period, and it really feels the benefit of an updated arrangement. Tolis is making good use of his 7-string guitar here, which gives the song's signature riff a powerful, modern sound as Lucia's counter melodies on the violin weave between the guitar and vocal lines. The duelling lead section between the guitar and violin is a real highlight, and allowed us to mirror the kind of interplay you hear on the 'Qisma' album.
Once again, Pavel Ljubicic shines on the drums with a confident performance that serves the song, which in turn highlights the moments where he lets loose with a few histronic drum fills! Jonny Gibson-Smith on the keys adds some much-needed texture, acting almost as a rhythm guitar with his Hammond riffs before taking us to another dimension with some shimmering synths in the bridge.
As with the previous two tracks from this show, 'When Darkness Falls' was a joy to mix and I'm already looking forward to getting my hands on the next track! I hope that you enjoy listening to this spirited live performance of one of our oldest songs.
