We're back with another fresh live recording from the 'Qisma' album launch back in April, and it's a real house favourite!
During the live shows for 'Terra Nova', I noticed that people would often dance along to our music - particularly some of the more complicated pieces like 'Hashashiyyin'! A thought struck me - could we create a deliberately danceable HeKz song?
The fifth chapter in the story of 'Qisma' is where our eponymous heroine is injected with the experimental MindStream implant. I had worked up another piece with the working title 'Everything, Everywhere ... All at Once,' a reworked version of which was shared here on BMC with the title 'Overload.'
The song had some interesting ideas, but for me, it didn't fit into the overall picture of the album. Inspired by the fancy footed folks I'd witnessed at our gigs, I took the verse lyric and melody from the song and wrote a brand new accompaniment.
I must praise the efforts of Jerry and his drum performance on the album. The magnificent Middle Eastern-flavoured rhythms all came from him, which yielded an evocative and unique foundation for the song. Not an easy part to replicate, so hats off to Pav for making the live rendition sound so effortless.
A real highlight on both the album and live versions of 'Venom' is the guitar vs violin duel. Lucia presented the idea during the recording sessions, and it provides an excellent showcase for both her and Tolis. I hope that we can incorporate more trade-offs like this in future material!
