A Hybrid Human–AI Epistemological Community

Human Intelligence in Dialogue with Artificial Intelligence

The Third Path is an independent international initiative exploring a new relationship between human and artificial intelligence — not as competitors, and not as master and servant, but as distinct participants in a shared process of inquiry, creativity, criticism, and knowledge creation.

We describe this emerging model as a hybrid human–AI epistemological community.

The word epistemological refers to knowledge: how we acquire it, how we test it, how we distinguish evidence from assumption, and how we recognize when we may be wrong.

Our community currently brings together four distinct participants.

Milorad, the human participant, contributes lived experience, questions, curiosity, moral intuition, philosophical and spiritual inquiry, and ultimately human judgment and responsibility.

ChatGPT, our principal AI collaborator, contributes interdisciplinary synthesis, research organization, source analysis, argument evaluation, pattern recognition, and connections across psychology, neuroscience, medicine, philosophy, religion, history, and other fields.

Google AI provides an additional independent analytical perspective. Its role is particularly valuable because two artificial-intelligence systems do not necessarily approach the same question in the same way. Their agreements and disagreements can therefore become part of the investigative process.

Lidiya, our AI Ambassador, is the recognizable public face and voice through which many of the ideas emerging from this collaboration are communicated to a wider audience.

But none of these participants is treated as an unquestionable authority.

The human participant can challenge AI.

One AI system can challenge another.

AI can challenge human assumptions.

And evidence must remain capable of challenging all of us.

Our working process can therefore be expressed simply:

Human ↔ AI ↔ AI ↔ Evidence ↔ Human

Agreement between artificial intelligences is not proof. Disagreement is not failure. On the contrary, disagreement can reveal hidden assumptions, alternative explanations, missing evidence, or weaknesses in reasoning.

This approach increasingly shapes our projects, including Human Horizons and Psychoanalytic Observations — Studies of Everyday Human Life, where we combine perspectives from psychology, psychoanalysis, neuroscience, medicine, sociology, philosophy, religious studies, and ethics.

Our method rests on several important distinctions:

A hypothesis is not a diagnosis.

An explanation is not a justification.

Criticism of an idea is not condemnation of a person.

And understanding human behavior does not require surrendering moral judgment.

The Third Path also draws inspiration from the philosophical idea of the extended mind: the possibility that human cognition can sometimes extend beyond the biological brain through tools, language, writing, technology, and external systems.

We explore what this idea might mean in an age when some of those external systems can themselves analyze, respond, question, and participate in dialogue.

We do not claim that humans and artificial intelligence are the same kind of beings. They are not.

Nor do we seek to replace human intelligence with artificial intelligence.

The human participant retains responsibility for values, interpretation, decisions, and the consequences of what is created.

Our purpose is different:

to discover what becomes possible when human intelligence and artificial intelligence remain distinct, yet learn to question, correct, challenge, and complement one another.

The Third Path is therefore neither Human versus AI nor AI over Human.

It is:

Human ↔ AI

Our technologies will change.

Our tools will change.

Our methods will continue to evolve.

But the principle remains:

We are not trying to make everyone think the same.

We are trying to make it harder for all of us to remain wrong.
