Why does the human mind give a face to the invisible?
Throughout human history, thunder has become the voice of a god, nature has become a mother, death has become a supernatural messenger, and justice, destiny, time, and cosmic order have acquired personalities, emotions, intentions, and divine authority.
But how does this extraordinary transformation take place?
Why do human beings attribute consciousness, desires, anger, compassion, and moral judgment to forces and principles that may otherwise be understood as impersonal?
And what happens when symbolic representations become unquestionable claims about the nature of reality?
Today, The Third Path presents a new interdisciplinary study exploring these questions through cognitive psychology, neuroscience, comparative mythology, anthropology, philosophy of religion, and the psychology of belief.
Across twelve chapters organized into six parts, the study examines:
· The psychological origins of anthropomorphism and supernatural agency.
· How abstract concepts become gods, goddesses, and cosmic personalities.
· The representation of the universe as a divine body in sacred cosmologies.
· The transformation of mythological narratives into claims about physical and historical reality.
· Karma, destiny, divine justice, and the attribution of moral intention to suffering.
· Religious authority, obedience, collective identity, and the social consequences of supernatural belief.
· The distinction between symbolic meaning, subjective conviction, and independently verifiable knowledge.
Drawing upon examples from Hindu sacred literature, ancient Greek and Egyptian mythology, biblical traditions, and contemporary scientific research, the study explores one of humanity's most fascinating cognitive capacities: the ability to transform the unknown into a recognizable personality.
This investigation does not seek to ridicule religious traditions or dismiss the cultural and emotional significance of mythology.
Instead, it asks a fundamental epistemological question:
Does the human capacity to imagine an invisible conscious being provide evidence that such a being exists independently of the human mind?
Psychological explanations cannot, by themselves, establish the nonexistence of supernatural realities. Equally, the antiquity of a sacred narrative, the sincerity of belief, or the intensity of a personal experience cannot independently demonstrate that its supernatural interpretation is factually correct.
The purpose of this study is to preserve the distinction between imagination, belief, symbolic meaning, and knowledge — while recognizing the extraordinary role that mythology and religious thought have played in human civilization.
