THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THE WORD “RASCAL”
Religious Labeling, Moral Superiority, and the Construction of the Outsider

When does religious conviction become a judgment of another person's worth?

From Jesus' words about casting pearls before swine (Matthew 7:6) to the use of the word “rascal” by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder of ISKCON, our first study explores the psychology of religious labeling and the boundaries between spiritual conviction, criticism, and contempt.

Drawing on social psychology, psychoanalytic perspectives, and the study of religious authority, we examine how words can shape group identity, reinforce divisions, and influence the way believers perceive those who disagree with them.

This is not an attack on faith or religious believers. It is an invitation to examine a universal human tendency: transforming disagreement into a judgment of personal inferiority.

Our central question is simple:

Can we remain deeply committed to our beliefs without diminishing the dignity of those who believe differently?
