In this step-by-step tutorial, we'll guide you through the process of creating a charming tied bow pendant from sterling silver wire, yet you may use copper wire for this project as well. With basic jewellery-making tools [00:06] and a little patience, you can craft a unique piece that adds elegance and charm to all your outfits, or make a lovely gift for a special Bestie or Woman.
Step 1: Annealing the Wire [00:06]: Begin by annealing the sterling silver wire to make it more malleable. You can omit this step if you already purchased a dead soft silver wire. Use a torch to heat the wire until it glows red, then quench it in water to soften the metal. For this project I used 0.9 mm wire for the bow - approx. 10 cm was enough to create a piece of around 20x15 mm.
Step 2: Shaping [00:29]: Using round and flat nose pliers, and your fingers 😉, carefully shape the wire into the desired bow shape. Start with marking the middle and creating an open V shape; then use round nose pliers to make bow side ‘wings’. Pay attention to symmetry and proportions, adjusting the curves and loops as needed. Cross and wrap the endings to the back. I only wrapped them once, but you can as well add some volume in the middle by making one more round with the wire.
Step 3: Flattening the sides [03:41]: Shape the wire on a steel bench block and use a small hammer to gently flatten the sides and the endings of the bow. This step adds dimension and stability to the pendant.
Step 4: Soldering the link on top [04:06]: Prepare a small circular link from sterling silver wire and solder it onto the top centre of the bow pendant. First, melt some medium or easy solder on top of the spot where you plan to add the link, then solder the link on the side, so as to obtain a closed circle, and also to make the elements solder together more easily.
With the use of third hand immobilize the bow, heat evenly and with the help of jeweller’s tweezers hold the link in a way it touches the place where you want it to stay (place the bow and the link in a way that the surfaces with solder touch).
To ensure a secure connection always flux the joints first and use a soldering torch with caution - remember that while heating the silver melts and bents very easily, especially here, where we are using thin wires.
Let the bow cool slightly. Quench and pickle to remove the oxidation and flux residues. Rinse the ring thoroughly with water to remove any remaining pickle residue.
Step 5: Polishing [05:04]: Once the soldered item is cleared from the firescale, check if the elements need to be adjusted. Then you may begin the polishing process. For bigger scratches and irregularities, you may want to use coarser tools like files or sandpaper (stick). The rotary tool is not obligatory here, you may get great result by only using sandpaper, passing up to the finest-grained paper and at the end polishing your piece with jewellery cloth. Yet, using rotary tool will make the process much faster 😉. Start with coarser wheels and brushes, ending with polishing compound adequate for silver and soft buffing tip to achieve a smooth, shiny finish on your pendant.
Step 6: Final touches [05:25]: Check if all the shapes and finish are as you wish them to be.
