Ah! I really don’t know how to start this, for we all know that squealing can evolve into either a positive or negative thing. It may bring great benefit or retribution to everyone. Again, these thoughts are just my own view, and I guess the main purpose of this writing is for us to see both the positive and negative effects of condoning this act. At this very moment, it’s rampant. So if you’re reading this, choose your weapon.
On the positive side, a squealer might be a whistleblower who exposes wrongdoing to authorities, an act often considered morally good because it helps prevent harm. These are the things people usually point to as the “good” side of squealing. (I’m saying “they” because, personally, I could never do this.)
Exposing unethical behavior. Revealing illegal or unethical activities is often seen as a positive, ethical action that helps protect others.
Upholding justice. Speaking up against injustice or wrongdoing is considered a moral obligation by many ethicists.
On the negative side, according to Animal Farm by George Orwell (1945), the character “Squealer” is portrayed as a manipulative propagandist who lies to maintain a corrupt regime. This highlights the darker connotations of squealing:
Dishonest and manipulative. A squealer may use lies, half-truths, and manipulation to advance their own agenda or the agenda of those in power.
Betrayal. It often implies breaking trust or principles for personal gain.
Cowardice. A squealer can be seen as someone too afraid to face the truth or stand up for what’s right on their own.
Selfish motives. Sometimes it’s done for personal advantage, like reducing punishment or gaining a reward.
Breach of loyalty. In groups such as schools, prison gangs, or tight-knit communities, “squealing” or “snitching” breaks solidarity and leads to loss of trust or even ostracism.
In a social context, being a “squealer” is generally viewed negatively because it betrays loyalty and breaks unwritten codes of trust. However, the morality of informing on someone is complex and heavily depends on the circumstances. What may be seen as betrayal in one situation could be viewed as necessary and even noble in another.
Ultimately, the morality of being a squealer depends on your motivation and the consequences of your actions. There is no simple “good or bad” answer, it exists on a spectrum shaped by intent and circumstance.
