The things nobody saw you do today

The things nobody saw you do today

Aug 11, 2026

imageyou did more today than you think. and nobody saw any of it. so i'm going to say it out loud.

you almost didn't get up.

the alarm went off and your eyes stayed closed, and for a long, heavy minute you genuinely considered not moving. not forever. just indefinitely. and then something in you the smallest, most stubborn flicker made you swing your legs over the side. you sat on the edge of the mattress with your feet on the cold floor and breathed for a second before you stood.

you didn't tell anyone about that minute. you just got up and started.

you rehearsed the phone call before you made it.

you sat in your parked car outside the pharmacy, or maybe just in your driveway, and you practiced the words three times because your chest gets tight when you have to ask for something, when you have to be the one who initiates, when you have to risk someone's tone being sharp with you. you practiced it like you were defusing something. and then you made the call.

you said "i'm fine" today, and this time you noticed you were lying.

someone asked how you were. you smiled and said fine. but somewhere behind your eyes you quietly admitted: no. i'm tired. i'm hollow. i'm still angry about something that happened two years ago. you didn't say it out loud. you just stopped lying to yourself about it. you stood in the middle of the grocery store, holding a basket, and let the truth sit there for one second.

you fed someone today. maybe a kid. maybe just yourself.

and you did it running on nothing. you stood at the stove, or you heated the leftovers, or you just put something on a real plate because you remembered, barely, that you matter enough to sit down. you didn't get a thank-you. you just made sure a living thing got fed, and cleaned up after, and nobody saw the effort it took to make your hands move.

you almost apologized for something that wasn't your fault.

the reflex kicked in. the old, trained, bone-deep reflex to say sorry, i didn't mean to, i'll fix it, i'm overreacting. you felt it rise in your throat. and then you stopped. you let the silence sit. you let them be uncomfortable. you didn't rush to smooth it over. you just walked away.

you sat in the car in the driveway for three minutes before you went inside.

the engine was off. the house was right there. the light was on. but you just sat there, hands on the steering wheel, because you needed a minute where nobody needed a single thing from you. you let yourself be still before you walked back into the load.

you went to bed, and you didn't reach across.

your body remembered to, for half a second. the old habit. the muscle memory of a shape that used to be there. but you stopped. you stretched your legs out. you took up the whole space. you let the dark be quiet, and you let the quiet be yours.

you'll wake up tomorrow and think you didn't do enough. you'll look at the laundry you didn't fold and the text you didn't answer, and you'll tell yourself you fell short. again.

but i saw today. i saw the minute on the edge of the bed. i saw the phone call you practiced. i saw the apology you swallowed. i saw the three minutes in the driveway. i saw you take up the whole bed at the end.

you've been carrying all of it without a single witness. so let me be the witness.

you were carrying more than anyone knew. you still made dinner. you still came home.

you turn off the lamp. the room goes dark. the house settles. you lie there for a second, and you let the day land.
