Bune, Our Ally: Devotion and the Documentary Trail

In our contemporary practice, we honor Bune as an ally and patron of Grimorium. We say this openly, as a statement of our own devotion—not as a conclusion drawn from historical sources. We neither expect nor ask readers to share or adopt it.

Grimorium brings this practice into conversation with a public digital library, documentary research, videos, and visual field notes. We keep the distinction clear: manuscripts record what their authors and scribes wrote; they cannot verify a present-day devotional relationship.

The documentary record

The witnesses tell different parts of Bune’s story. The Livre des Esperitz (c. 1450) associates Bune with moving bodies, wealth, and eloquence, and gives him thirty-five legions; it does not describe a dragon. Johann Weyer’s Pseudomonarchia Daemonum (1577) gives thirty legions and a dragon with three heads, identifying only the third as human. The later Ars Goetia specifies a dog, a griffin, and a human head. The manuscripts of the Lemegeton also preserve two seals for Bune.

Bune’s manuscript seal, Lemegeton, Sloane MS 2731, fol. 104r (c. 1686). Reproduced from the facsimile shown in Grimorium’s Bune entry; see that page for the source context and later printed form.

Devotion belongs to our practice; the historical record remains open to inspection.

Grimorium · original editorial note

This is a history of texts changing across witnesses—not proof of a modern belief or a promise of supernatural effects. The image above is the manuscript seal reproduced in Grimorium’s Bune entry; the page links it to the source and sets it beside the later printed form.

Read the complete Bune entry, with source excerpts, translations, facsimiles, and editorial notes, in Grimorium’s free library.

Our public work also continues through the Grimorium YouTube channel and Instagram field notes. The library and research remain open to everyone.

Support Grimorium, if you wish

A voluntary contribution helps maintain the library, document sources, and keep public resources available. It supports Grimorium’s editorial work; it is not a ritual offering to Bune, a purchase of spiritual favor, or a promise of material or magical results.
