Mary and Elizabeth

The Virtuous Woman of Good Fruit · Bible Study Series 1 · A free Bible study from Good Fruit Heritage

What does it really mean to be “highly favoured” by God? How do we respond when God’s plans turn our lives upside down? And how do we keep faith through long years of waiting?

Two women stand at the very start of the Gospel story: Mary, a young woman from Nazareth chosen to be the mother of Jesus, and her older relative Elizabeth, who waited many years before becoming the mother of John the Baptist. Their faith, humility and courage still speak to women today. This is the first study in our series The Virtuous Woman of Good Fruit.

In this study you will discover:

•     What God’s favour really is. Learn what “highly favoured” means, and why favour is not the same as an easy life.

•     “The Lord is with thee.” Find comfort in God’s promise to be present with His people in every season.

•     Two responses to one angel. See why Mary’s question was faith while Zacharias’ question was doubt, and why God silenced him.

•     Mary’s Song. Explore the Magnificat, a song of worship and humility drawn from the Scriptures Mary had treasured in her heart.

•     Christ born of Mary. Follow the story from Joseph’s dream to Bethlehem, the shepherds, the Temple and the flight to Egypt.

•     Elizabeth’s waiting and humility. Discover how God took away her reproach, and how she honoured a younger woman without a trace of jealousy.

•     From silence to song. Watch Zacharias move from doubt to faith as he names his son John and prophesies the coming of the Saviour.

“And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.”  (Luke 1:38, KJV)

How to use it

Use it for personal devotion, with a friend, or in a women’s group. Have your Bible open as you go: the study quotes key verses from the King James Version and points you to the full passages to read. Reflection questions and a closing prayer help you apply the lessons of Mary and Elizabeth to your own life.
