Family Adventure in Southeast Asia

Feb 26, 2025

The moment we decided to embrace full-time travel and world-schooling , we knew one thing for sure—our home, packed with years of accumulated belongings, wasn’t coming with us. The dream was simple: trade in the weight of “stuff” for the freedom of movement. The reality? A whirlwind of decluttering, selling, and downsizing our lives into two backpacks and four pieces of hand luggage.

Step 1: The Big Declutter—What Stays, What Goes?

Letting go of a home full of belongings is both liberating and overwhelming. Every item held a memory, a purpose, or a “just in case” excuse. But as we sifted through it all, one question became our guiding mantra: “Would we pack this in our backpack?”

• Furniture & Appliances: Most Sold, donated, or given to friends and family.

• Clothes: A ruthless wardrobe purge—goodbye to the “I might wear this someday” outfits.

• Toys & Books: The girls helped choose their favourite to take along; the rest found new homes.

• Sentimental Items: Kept to an absolute minimum and stored safely for the future.

Vinted became my new best friend , listed items online, and made countless trips to charity shops . Watching years of belongings disappear was strangely satisfying—it felt like shedding layers of our old life, making space for something new.

Step 2: Selling the Car—One-Way Ticket to Freedom

My car was the last big thing to go. It symbolised security and routine, school runs, shopping trips, weekend outings. Selling it meant committing fully to this new way of life. The day we handed over the keys, it hit us: this is real. There was no turning back.

Step 3: Packing for the Unknown—Two Backpacks, Four Hand Luggage, One Family

With most of our home emptied and our possessions minimised, it was time for the ultimate test: fitting our new life into a few bags.

• Backpacks (for Craig and i) Clothes for all climates, a first-aid kit, electronics, and essentials.

• Hand Luggage (for the girls) Their favourite books, small toys, a ipad for learning and entertainment, and just enough clothes to stay comfy on the go!

Packing was an exercise in mindfulness every item needed a reason to earn its place. We quickly learned that less is truly more, and most things could be bought along the way if needed.

And Just Like That, We Were Off…

With our home officially dismantled and our backpacks zipped up, we boarded a one-way flight to Thailand. No “stuff” No car, No storage unit full of “just in case” items—just us, our bags, and an open-ended adventure ahead.

The feeling? A mix of excitement, nerves, and pure exhilaration.

This journey isn’t just about travel, it’s about simplifying, embracing change, and showing our kids that the world is their classroom. The hardest part wasn’t letting go of our things, it was making the decision to do it.

Now, as we step into the unknown, we’re carrying the most important thing of all: freedom.
