At GMFF, we love programs that combine amateur radio with the thrill of the outdoors — and Summits on the Air (SOTA) is one of the most inspiring.

What is SOTA?
SOTA challenges radio amateurs to take their gear to the summits of qualifying hills and mountains, setting up portable stations at altitude. Operators become activators, while those making contacts with them are known as chasers. Both sides can earn points and awards, making it rewarding no matter where you are.

Why it’s special:

  • Activators face the challenge of lightweight portable setups, often in remote or harsh conditions.

  • Chasers get the excitement of logging rare or high-scoring summits from the comfort of their home station.

  • Every QSO carries the spirit of adventure, with activators broadcasting from breathtaking mountain landscapes.

For us at GMFF, SOTA is about more than just points or awards — it’s about the satisfaction of connecting radio with nature, pushing boundaries, and sharing Scotland’s rugged summits with the global ham community.

Your support helps us continue these activations, create expedition reports, and keep the spirit of portable amateur radio alive. Together, we take radio to new heights.
