So like. Can we talk about how music moves people?
How sound and language literally touch folks in various ways?

In this case, tonight it brought me to complete my laundry folding and then into what the OG’s would refer to as crate digging for new music. The music journey began with trips to Rasputin records with my dad when I was old enough to ask for cassette tapes and even wanted to buy my momma Lauryn Hill’s Miseducation album. Nowadays, though, my music search practice has had to evolve with the times. Still, shout out (& sorry, artists) to Napster, Limewire, burned CDs to and from my besties to my lovers, to what the GenZ’s+ will forever know now, as streaming… & within seconds, mmkay. (Cue a “back in my day” ol’ lady scene).

Tonight’s 2:22 (I see what yawls did there- if they ever read this someday) track, “Come Correct”, by Blimes Brixton and Gifted Gab certainly came different enough to grab ya girl’s ears to lean in a little more. The track begins with 4 roughly estimated 16-count instrumental intro featuring what sounds like an electric piano and some looped, chopped, mashed up (insert the name of those instrument(s) sounds here). No cap, respectfully, but the first emcee, Blimes, stepped in with a cadence that made me wonder how this YT-presenting chick could pick up that much steez off her first bar! Shout out to Seattle though. It sorta made sense after that. Because you think about the culture and music scene up in the Portland/Seattle area. It’s like the Bay Area’s cousin when it comes to the hip-hop/rap scene. Part of that West Coast hip hop field.

As I was continuing to lean into the music whilst (yes, whilst) tucking away fresh towels, I peeped the transition from Blimes’ “dragon’s breath” line to Gab’s “not too many that can handle this, I’m a hip hop analyst” and I began to wonder “who is themmmm?”. Pero because honestly conscious hip-hop is all I’m genuinely interested in, nowadays. Pero because… words are spells. And side note because, what are we as a collective, really, actually consuming & perpetuating in terms of music? Disclaimer: this doesn’t mean I don’t not-listen or shake my ass to other types of hip-hop/music.

But anyways. When Blimes came back saying Gab passed the mix left “call it a lateral, parable parallel, galactical”, was lyrical flavor equivalent to perhaps that second or third bite of something hot, juicy, delicious (i.e. a burger, or… HAA), except to my ears/mind. It’s a must track to drop & discuss perhaps, and especially with your hiphop music head ass friends/family, especially after a lil smoke sesh.
