Full Moon, you saw me standing alone...

Full Moon, you saw me standing alone...

Jan 14, 2025

If you've been attuned to the cosmos, go easy on me. My middle school self did not have the decolonized support system to follow through with my (western) astrology 8th grade final presentation report I submitted to a Mr. Dorsey. A very westernized teacher who may have raised his eyebrows and gave me an A just to appease the school district's standards with passing kiddos to the next education level. Re-entering the field in my 30's, learning and speaking on public platforms with many prestigious astrologists can be quite intimidating.

According to Hellenistic (Greek) Astronomy, today is Moonday, and it is the first full moon-day of the 2025th Gregorian calendar year. The moon is passing through the constellation and zodiac archetype known as Cancer. What does this mean? In short, western astrology refers to Cancer as a representation of the home and family. Cancer is the cardinal water sign that kicks off the longest day of the year (summer solstice), and invites us to look into our emotional states, intuition, sensitivities & nurturing tendencies (or lack thereof), and perhaps insecurities (like the literal crab crawling back into its shell). On the 12-house wheel, Cancer is naturally based in the 4th house, which corresponds directly to the family and lineage.

So. We have an initiating, watery, home-sy sign whilst a full moon reigns the night sky? While the NIH will strike down myths about hospitals during the full moon, one can't help but to wonder about the energetic pulls that might contribute to enabling more erratic human behavior. Just as the tides respond to the moon's pull and our bodies are made up of 60% water... What can one hypothesize? Many mystics could say it is a no brainer because it's more intuitive than science. Yet science can play a role in perhaps explaining the phenomena.

Earlier last year, one of my astrology teachers instructed the cohort to meditate with the moon phases while it passes through the 12 zodiac signs. They wanted us to notice how other humans and ourselves tend to act. In my corner of the world, I noticed people tend to seem more sleepy/tired when the moon is in a watery sign, versus a fire sign. Communication seems more prominent when the moon is in air signs. Foodie-outings seem to be more satisfying when the moon is in Taurus (earth sign), specifically.

Earlier today, in addition to the range of astrologers speaking their content publicly online, I noticed a somatic therapist post about depth psychology. I couldn’t help but wonder if her reflection was covertly tied to this full moon. According to @AileyJolie, “depth psychology teaches that places hold meaning”. That our homes contain symbols & smells that tether us to a sense of safety & thus, self. When the home is destroyed or taken away, the nervous system is threatened, and rootlessness can occur. Psychological symptoms manifest as distress in the forms of anxiety, depression, and insomnia. These symptoms can increase the likelihood of an individual to become disassociated from feeling a sense of displacement and unsafeness. So when Ailey stated, “Embodiment is a form of homecoming”, I couldn’t help but wonder if this moon is calling us to reflect on the meaning of “home”, especially as it pertains to our bodies. Think of the many times the feeling of safety within “home”/family has been ruptured, from our childhood up to global disasters such as the literal recent displacement of fire victims from their homes in LA. Think of the constant stimulation of online media contents encouraging us to be in fight, flight, freeze, fawn mode. In a recent conversation with a dear sister/mother friend, her vulnerable reflection on a sometimes need for support with raising children activated a remembrance code in me. It reminded me that in many lifetimes before colonialism, BIPOC people did exist in villages. And we did support one another with various tricks and trades. How providing “time off” from motherhood duties would support her nervous system & re-establish a sense of safety.

My hope is this first full watery moon of 2025, in full recognition of all the bleak and beautiful things occurring in every and any corner of this current world we exist in; also our Mother, our home– I wonder if this specific, fully aligned Moonday -cosmic forecast is calling us to awaken, become more aware, and deepen our practice with the ways we intentionally (or not) connect… to our minds & bodies. To explore what “embodiment” means, and how to reclaim this quite ancestral, pre-colonial inner knowing or knowledge– before capitalism c/overtly influenced us to be chronically disassociated, to live in fear, & to not be home.
