There is no ease in mourning an entire city, singing of a perished sea, of the dead who scream in your ear morning and night, or of the living who have buried themselves in your heart.

It is too painful for the narrowness of an elegy to enshroud all of this sorrow, or for a single poem to place within it what you have been tired of holding since the dawn of your birth.

It is impossible for an elegy to become an eternal bed for thousands of martyrs or replace the scent of a loved one.

It crushes my soul; how can one elegy stitch my map of wounds or harbor a city that ages without end, that dies without death, and that weeps in the middle of the night like a child whose father was killed by war before her eyes?

Weary as a lone leaf on a bare branch, fighting the gale.

May this grief become an autumn song that carries me through the coldness of my memory, the street walking me, the falling buildings that breathe in me, and the choked conversations I never started with a perished sea.

Order Mohammed Moussa’s most recent book of poetry today.
