Wintertime Saturdays are a highlight of my week. Edinburgh Farmers Market Day. A time for thanksgiving to all Scotland's wonderful farmers.

I prise myself out of bed at 7.30am, on the promise of the pick of the crop from the wonderful array of foodstuffs from the Edinburgh Farmers Market, situated in close proximity to the towering extinct plug of volcanic rock upon which my local castle, Edinburgh Castle is sat.
Today, there were stallholders from the foot of the Lammermuir Hills in East Lothian Tweed Valley Venison in the Scottish Borders and Annan Water in wild, open landscape near Moffat in the Southern Uplands, South West Scotland. Also, there was an ever present and busy stallholder, selling a plethora of fish from Loch Fyne, to the north and west of Loch Lomond National Park, which of itself is just top the north of Glasgow, on the west side of our magnificent country.
Today I spoke with co-owner Sarah on the Annan Water stall. Upon querying their absence from the Edinburgh Market for the month of January she replied that they were diversifying on the farm, building a shepherd's hut as an off grid rural retreat. That will therefore be their New Year focus.
I spent £28 today. Money most prudently used. My wife and I shall not want for top quality, Scottish produce for the rest of the week.
