He Went Away Sad

He Went Away Sad

Aug 17, 2025

“If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
When the young man heard this statement, he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

Matthew 19:21–22

It was a moment full of promise. A young man, sincere and eager, came to Jesus and asked what he must do to gain eternal life. He had lived a good life, kept the commandments, and now wanted to go deeper. Jesus saw him, loved him, and gave him a personal invitation: sell what you have, give to the poor, and follow me.

It should have been a joyful encounter. But it ended in sorrow.

The young man walked away not because he did not believe, but because he could not let go. His possessions were not just things. They were his security, his comfort, maybe even part of his identity. He wanted the Kingdom of God, but not at the cost of everything he knew.

Jesus was not angry. He was not trying to shame or reject him. He simply told the truth. He invited the young man into something far greater than wealth. He offered a treasure in heaven. But it required a decision. A surrender.

That same invitation is given to us. Not always in the form of selling our belongings, but in the quiet nudges to loosen our grip on what we trust more than Him. It might be control, comfort, fear, ambition, or resentment. Whatever it is, He sees it. And He lovingly asks us to follow Him with our whole heart.

Sometimes we say yes. Sometimes we walk away sad.

Even when we hesitate, Jesus waits. He does not withdraw His love.

What would it look like to follow Jesus more freely in this season of your life?

Jesus, help me not to walk away from You.
If there is anything in my life that I hold more tightly than Your hand, help me release it.
Teach me to trust in the treasure only You can give.
Amen.
